Chapter Nine: One Step Ahead

Ranger

“Ranger, where the fuck are you?” Keys asked me over the cell.

“I stopped for gas at one of Delphia’s stations. My bike’s been acting real fucking weird, but I’ll be back in Cutover in an hour. What’s the matter, Keys?” I asked, popping the gas pump back in the holder.

“It’s better we discuss it when you get back. Be careful, alright?”

“I always am.” I hung up the phone, slipping it back into my pocket, wondering what the hell was going on. My muscles tensed up at the recollection of conversation I had with Bones only a half hour ago. I gave him the details about my unwanted package and that I was nowhere close to finding the man who’d disrupted his damn peace.

Bones was more than agitated. He had enough on his shoulders, enough shit to deal with.

I just wanted to clear it all up for him.

I thought about Abby. I remembered every strange occurrence between us, fixating on the moments right before she’d lose it, but I couldn’t quite figure out why she did. Something was setting her off, something that probably had a lot to do with why she wasn’t opening up to me and it was driving me fucking crazy.

You won’t tell me shit, Abby. Neither will Harper. I tried to talk to her last night when I dropped you off after the park, but she avoided me. Why? Is she hiding something too?

The fluorescent lights streamed down, glinting against my green bike. I let go of the plastic fume-guard, locking everything up right before I grabbed my card from the gas pump, ready to head out. I swallowed hard, my throat dry, begging for a drink. The giant blue slushie poster outside the convenience store enticed me and I pulled my bike to one of the parking spots before I made it inside.

A tall, hulking man stood behind the counter, nodding with a quick up-down glance to let me know he acknowledged my presence.

I nearly picked up one of the gigantic slushie cups to fill myself when I noticed the sign for a discounted beer. A beer’s really more my speed anyway. Something tells me I’ll need more than a sugar rush to deal with whatever Keys has to tell me.

I grabbed a cold one from the cooler, hearing snickering coming from the back of the store by the chip stand.

Three bikers gathered around there, patting each other on the back while they slid some snacks into their jackets.

I shrugged it off, letting them continue because it sure as hell wasn’t my problem.

Then, one of them approached me. He couldn’t have been older than nineteen, but the others were well into their thirties. They looked like they ran in a pack, wearing the same cuts as those fuckers down at The Watering Hole. “You should be minding your own business. I see you looking over at us,” he said.

“You really don’t want to fuck with me, man. Let me buy my beer and get out of here.
